The analogy on which the artist bases the rationale of this project rests with the fact that coal is a sediment. As coal is mined and hence the sediment disturbed, what lies beneath often leads to knowledge, results, theories and more questions. Coal mining was one of the few occupations in which a person faced a very real risk of death by all four classical elements earth, air, fire and water (Freese. 2006, p.47). This work reflects on the human act and its repercussions on humanity and nature, death being the pivot on which understanding balances.
